This position plays a critical role in delivering high-quality, hands-on care to our valued Veterans.

Job Overview – Nursing Assistant (NA), Acute Care

As a Nursing Assistant in the Float Pool, you’ll provide essential support across five different hospital units, including 1:1 Veteran patient monitoring. You will work under the supervision of licensed nursing staff to assist with daily patient care and help ensure a safe and supportive environment.

Basic Qualifications

To be eligible for this Nursing Assistant position, you must meet the following basic federal requirements:

Grade-Level Requirements

GS-03 (Entry Level)

  • No additional experience beyond the basic requirements

  • Ideal for candidates new to the field; close supervision provided

GS-04

  • Experience: One year of related NA or healthcare experience
    OR

  • Education: Two years of post-high school education in healthcare-related fields

  • Must demonstrate the following Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):

    • Ability to assist with nursing care and patient recovery plans

    • Skill in observing and reporting changes in patients’ physical or emotional status

    • Competence using clinical equipment (e.g., blood glucose monitors, bladder scanners)

    • Effective communication with patients, families, and medical teams

GS-05 (Full Performance Level)

  • Experience: One year of progressively responsible work at GS-4 level
    OR

  • Education: Completion of a bachelor’s degree with 24 semester hours in healthcare-related courses

  • Must demonstrate the following advanced KSAs:

    • Ability to deliver comprehensive nursing care under RN or LPN supervision

    • Strong oral communication with patients, families, and care teams

    • Ability to respond effectively in emergency care situations (e.g., CPR, crisis support)

    • Serve as a preceptor for newly hired Nursing Assistants

Preferred Experience

  • Hospital Nursing Assistant experience strongly preferred

  • Previous float pool or 1:1 Veteran sitter experience is a plus

Additional Information

  • Salary Range: GS-3 to GS-5 (based on qualifications and experience)

  • Work Setting: VA Hospital, Acute Care, Float Pool assignments

  • Physical Requirements: No pre-placement physical exam required

  • Education: Only U.S. Department of Education-accredited degrees accepted
