Position Overview

As an Inpatient Care Management Nurse (RN), you will perform utilization review, care coordination, and discharge planning for inpatient cases. Using evidence-based guidelines such as InterQual criteria, you’ll collaborate with physicians, medical directors, and care teams to ensure timely, appropriate care for patients across various clinical settings.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct initial and concurrent reviews of inpatient hospital cases using InterQual or similar evidence-based criteria

  • Collaborate with facility-based providers to review care plans and treatment goals

  • Work closely with Optum Medical Directors and Clinical Services teams on utilization management decisions

  • Identify barriers or delays in care and work to resolve them promptly

  • Assist in discharge planning and transitions of care

  • Maintain compliance with state, federal, and accreditation standards

  • Document findings and recommendations using internal platforms

  • Participate in team meetings, audits, and process improvement initiatives

  • Communicate professionally with internal and external Case Managers and Providers

Required Qualifications

  • Active and unrestricted RN license in your state of residence

  • 3+ years of acute care hospital nursing experience (ICU, Med/Surg, ER, etc.)

  • 1+ year of experience in utilization review, case management, or discharge planning

  • Proficiency in Windows-based applications (Teams, Outlook, Excel) and EMR/clinical platforms

  • A private, secure workspace and access to high-speed internet via cable or DSL

Preferred Qualifications (Nice-to-Have)

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)

  • Compact RN license

  • Previous experience in managed care or health insurance

  • Experience with telephonic nursing, discharge planning, or case management systems
