Project Background

This role supports annual audit activities in accordance with the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) Circular A-123. You will conduct internal controls testing at both central offices and field locations to identify potential weaknesses. The federal agency we assist oversees annual assurance on the effectiveness of internal controls over financial reporting.

You will provide audit services focused on grants supporting very low-income Veteran families transitioning to permanent housing. These grants fund nonprofits and consumer cooperatives delivering critical supportive services that promote housing stability.

Responsibilities

  • Identify and verify all funding sources and expenses related to supportive services.

  • Evaluate if costs comply with OMB regulations, grant rules, and Program Guide requirements.

  • Ensure grantees adhere to expense thresholds and financial reporting requirements.

  • Assess the adequacy of supportive services qualitatively and quantitatively (e.g., outreach, case management, VA benefits assistance).

  • Conduct site audits in person, traveling up to 1-2 weeks monthly across U.S. locations.

  • Provide clear, detailed written and oral audit reports.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree (preferably in accounting, finance, or related field).

  • 3+ years’ experience reviewing internal controls, cash management, accounting records, and grant compliance.

  • Advanced proficiency in MS Excel (especially Pivot Tables).

  • Ability and willingness to travel interstate 1-2 weeks per month, including occasional weekends.

  • Must have a personal credit card for approved reimbursable expenses.

  • Strong attention to detail, analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.

  • Proficient in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio, Project).

  • Ability to obtain a Public Trust Clearance.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with the VA or other federal agencies.

  • Knowledge of grants internal control program guides and compliance with federal regulations including 2 CFR 200, 38 CFR Part 61 & 62, IPERIA support, and continuous monitoring.
